James Stagg | Three Guys and a Fountain

THE PHOTOGRAPH AND STORY in today’s New York Times about the onslaught of summer tourists at the Trevi Fountain in Rome reminds us of one of the great travel paintings by San Francisco painter James Stagg.

Movie star handsome and possessed of a bold stroke and brilliant colors, Stagg cut a wide swath through the San Francisco art scene in the 1990s. He left us much too young in 2001, but lives on through his work — mostly paintings of San Francisco, many first published in San Francisco Focus magazine, but also others of his extensive travels in California and around the world.
